Glencoe, one of Scotland's favourite climbing areas, is probably best known for the massacre of 1692, when the Macdonalds of Glencoe, whilst hosting a visiting troop of soldiers from Campbell of Argyll, were set upon and killed whilst they slept. Although it was for many years seen as a treacherous betrayal of Highland hospitality, the entire event was politically motivated to keep the Jacobites under control.
