Image no. MT18

The Matterhorn lies across the Swiss-Italian border, so that each end of the summit ridge lies in a different country. The photo was taken from the Swiss end, and the iron cross at the other end marks the 'Italian' summit. The Swiss end is the higher, at 4478m or 14,690ft, whilst the Italian end is lower by 1.1m. or 43 inches. The most popular ascent route is via the Hornli ridge, which rises from Schwarzsee, above Zermatt. With Zermatt lying at an altitude of 1600m (5250ft) the total ascent is 2878m (9440ft), but this is normally broken with an overnight at the Hornli Hut, from which the ascent takes about 4 to 4.5 hours. The picture was taken in 1955, but I doubt it is much different today, perhaps a little less snow.
