My wife and I were fortunate in visiting Kashmir in 1989 about a week before it was closed to tourism, following rising violence due to the growing dispute between India and Pakistan over this Muslim dominated province of India. The result has been tragic for this wonderful region and its hospitable people. The picture of a man paddling his 'shikara' was taken from another similar shikara on a river in Srinigar, the capital.
